The Sellwood Bridge Project: County Approves New Taxes

Quoting a recently published Portland Business Journal article:

Multnomah County drivers will pay $19 per year to help build a new Sellwood Bridge.

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners adopted a vehicle registration fee that will charge drivers $38 every two years. The fees will raise $127 million over 20 years.

A replacement bridge for the dilapidated Sellwood structure is expected to cost $330 million.

The 64-foot-wide bridge would contain two traffic lanes, two bike lanes and two pedestrian sidewalks. Officials hope the bridge can open in 2016.

The Portland Business Journal article makes no mention of the five waterfront condos that will undergo eminent domain condemnation proceedings in order to build the wider structure... nor does the article remind readers that there were alternatives proposed that would have avoided condemnation as well as accommodated pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Sad to see homeowners losing their residences to the government. Beautiful waterfront location.
